SOAS, University of London

Editorial strategy & tone of voice

I wrote and edited the SOAS Distance Learning Prospectus, a 34-page guide to postgraduate study for international students seeking a University of London qualification.

The project involved consolidating three existing prospectuses into a single, coherent publication, researching the courses and restructuring a large amount of information to make it clearer and easier to navigate.

I also helped shape a new editorial format and tone of voice, moving the prospectus towards a more engaging and persuasive style aimed particularly at senior professionals and the organisations supporting their professional development.

Achievements

  • Consolidated three separate prospectuses into one 34-page publication, rationalising and restructuring a substantial amount of existing content.
  • Researched and edited complex course information, turning it into clear, concise and accessible content for an international audience.
  • Developed a clearer information hierarchy and structure, helping prospective students understand and compare the courses available.
  • Helped establish a new tone of voice, making the content more engaging and persuasive while retaining SOAS’s academic credibility.
  • Adapted content for an international audience, including readers who did not speak English as a first language.
  • Balanced the needs of multiple audiences, including prospective postgraduate students, senior professionals and employers.
  • Advised on the format and editorial approach of the new prospectus, considering how content and design could work together to improve the reader experience.
  • Edited and quality-checked the publication throughout, ensuring consistency, accuracy and clarity across the finished prospectus.
